Andrew Gagiu

2024 Cello Festival

Andrew Gagiu enjoys a multi-faceted career as a freelance cellist and pedagogue. Originally from Seattle, WA, he has performed in many ensembles across the U.S., currently active with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra as a Section Cellist. He teaches privately out of his home in Champaign, IL, and with the Illinois Community Music Academy.

Andrew has participated in rigorous summer festivals throughout the country and has performed in various competitions. Most recently, he participated in and served as a Counselor at the Aria International Summer Academy. Other festivals of note include Cincinnati Young Artists Cello Academy, Marrowstone Music Festival (Fellowship Division), Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, and Rocky Ridge Music Festival Young Artist Seminar. Andrew has also competed as a Finalist in the Western Michigan University Concerto Compeition, MTNA Michigan Young Artist String Competition, and Southern Adventist University Concerto Competition.

Mr. Gagiu currently studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign toward a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Cello Performance and Literature. He has previously studied Cello Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy at The Hartt School and Western Michigan University. Andrew’s major teachers include Daniel McDonough (Jupiter String Quartet), Mihai Tetel, Bruce Uchimura, Lara Turner, and Mary Walters. His Suzuki mentors include Blake Brasch and Andrea Yun.
