Hugh Choi

2024 Cello Festival

Hugh Choi is a freshman cellist attending Westlake High School. He started playing the cello when he was 9 years old, under the guidance of Dr. Seulki Lee and Dr. Rylie Harrod.

He enjoys playing in various orchestras, such as West Ridge Middle School Orchestra, Austin Youth Orchestra, and Westlake High School Orchestra. He has also been a member of the TMEA All-Region Orchestra since 2021.

His passion for music appears also as playing in ensembles. He has been playing his quartets in West Ridge Middle School and Westlake High School. His team will play in the Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest, May 2024.

He has won several awards in competitions as solo player, such as being a 1st prize winner of the Golden Classical Music Awards in 2022, which led to a debut at Carnegie Hall, and the finalist of the Chicago International Music Competition in 2023, which allowed him to perform at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. Also, he will appear in the solo division in the Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest, May 2024.

He has also attended many summer music programs, where he impressed his teachers and peers with his musical talent and leadership abilities. He received honors and scholarships at the Texas String Festival in 2022 and the Texas State University String Camp in 2023. He has also played in the 2023 Midwest Young Artists Conservatory Summer Festival Orchestra.

In his free time, he plays ice hockey or referees games as a USA Hockey official.
