Jasper Sewell is a rising sophomore at the Rice University Shepherd School of Music, studying under Paul Kantor. While in high school, he studied with Vanderbilt University professor Carolyn Huebl and performed with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera in southeast Tennessee, first as a violist and then a first violinist. He received tenure for his violin position in April 2024 and is also a substitute violinist with the Huntsville Symphony in Alabama and the Wilmington Symphony in North Carolina. Jasper was awarded first prize at the Tennessee MTNA competition in 2023 and 2024, and was selected as alternate for the Southern division competition in 2024. He also won second prize in the 2023 Nashville Symphony Curb Concerto Competition and the 2022-23 American Virtuoso International Music Competition. He soloed with the Chattanooga Symphony in 2022 and, most recently, performed the Saint-Saëns Third Violin Concerto in its entirety with the Southern Adventist University Symphony Orchestra in April 2025. Jasper is also the violist of the FaMa Quartet, which formed at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in 2021 and won silver at the 2022 Coltman Chamber Music Competition and gold at the 2023 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He has performed in masterclasses as a soloist with artists including Sibbi Bernhardsson, Stefan Jackiw, and John Corigliano, and in chamber music masterclasses with current and former members of the Muir, Miró, Emerson, Parker, and Balourdet Quartets, as well as the Merz Trio. Jasper was featured on NPR’s From the Top with the FaMa Quartet in 2023 and again as a soloist in 2024. Outside of music, he enjoys swimming, sleeping, and spending time with his six younger brothers while at home.
