Joshua Kang

2023 Cello Festival

Joshua Kang is 14 years old and lives in Williamsburg, VA.  He began playing cello at the age of six with Mrs. Susan Hines and currently studies with Mr. Michael Daniels.  In July 2022, Joshua attended the Heifetz Junior Summer Music Institute where he studied cello with Dr. Minna Rose Chung and participated in a masterclass with Ms. Yi Qun Xu.  During prior summers, he participated in the Cleveland Institute of Music – Close Encounters With Cello and the George Mason University Summer Strings Institute.

In 2023, Joshua won the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra concerto competition, and the Williamsburg Music Club Grants-in-Aid (junior division) competition.  He was runner-up in the York River Symphony Orchestra concerto competition.  Joshua has been a member of the Tidewater Cello Ensemble since 2019, Williamsburg Youth Orchestra since 2021, and has the privilege of playing piano and cello periodically with his church worship team.

Joshua has been studying piano with Mrs. Teresa Falk since the age of five.  He has participated in piano masterclasses with Andrew von Oeyen, Dr. Catherine Lan/Tao Lin, and Natasha Paremski.  In May 2022, he received Honorable Mention at the Eastern Virginia Music Teachers Association competition. 

Joshua enjoys playing tennis and video games with his friends, and has a particular interest in discovering and playing video game soundtracks.
