Joshua Kang

2024 Cello Festival

Joshua Kang is 14 years old and lives in Williamsburg, VA.  He began playing cello at the age of six with Mrs. Susan Hines and currently studies with Mr. Michael Daniels.  In July 2022, Joshua attended the Heifetz Junior Summer Music Institute where he studied cello with Minna Rose Chung and performed in a masterclass with Yi Qun Xu.  During Summer of 2023, he participated in the National Symphony Orchestra/Kennedy Center Summer Music Institute (orchestra program), and attended the Ascent International Cello Festival.  Other summer activities have included the Cleveland Institute of Music – Close Encounters With Cello, George Mason University Summer String Institute, and Csehy Summer School of Music.

In 2023, Joshua won the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra concerto competition, the Williamsburg Music Club GIA (junior division) competition, and was runner-up in the York River Symphony Orchestra concerto competition.  In 2024, Joshua was selected for the Virginia All-State Orchestra and placed third in the 2024 Williamsburg Music Club (senior division) competition.  Joshua has been a member of the Tidewater Cello Ensemble since 2019, Williamsburg Youth Orchestra since 2021, Jamestown High School Honors Orchestra since 2023, and has the privilege of playing piano and cello periodically with his church worship team.  He is currently the principal cellist for Williamsburg Youth Orchestra and Jamestown High School Orchestra.

Joshua has studied the piano with Mrs. Teresa Falk since the age of five.  He has participated in piano masterclasses with Andrew von Oeyen, Dr. Catherine Lan and Tao Lin, and Natasha Paremski.  In May 2022, he received Honorable Mention at the Eastern Virginia Music Teachers Association competition. 

Joshua enjoys learning about the classics and playing tennis and video games with his friends.  He has a particular interest in discovering and playing video game soundtracks.
