Kai Werlinsky is currently pursuing a double degree in Violin Performance and Physics at Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he studies with Sibbi Bernhardsson.
A graduate of Lyons Township High School, Kai served as Concertmaster of the LT Concert Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfonietta. He was the winner of the Lyons Township High School Concerto Competition and also earned a runner-up placement the previous year.
Kai’s orchestral experience includes playing with the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Intensive Chamber Music Program, where he was a finalist in top national competitions such as the St. Paul String Quartet Competition, Rembrandt Chamber Music Competition and the Chicago National Chamber Music Competition.
During his first year at Oberlin, Kai premiered four new works by student composers, performed live music for a silent film screening, and gave a full recital with his quartet.
His professional experience also includes substitute violin work with the Kankakee Symphony Orchestra and the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, as well as being featured on WFMT radio. Honors include Assistant Concertmaster of the Illinois All-State Orchestra and a seat in the All-State Honors Orchestra.
Kai has attended summer festivals such as Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Camp, Aria International Summer Academy, and completed his first Winter Term project at the Hidden Valley Chamber Music Intensive. He was recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Walgreens Concerto Competition and placed third in the Stanger Concerto Competition.
He also participated in a commercial recording of Jubilee by George Bridgtower.
In his free time, Kai enjoys rock climbing, playing cards, and sight reading with friends.
