Kevin Hernandez

2024 Cello Festival

Kevin Hernandez is currently pursuing studies in cello at the New Music School in Chicago, IL, under the tutelage of David Cunliffe. From a young age, he eagerly participated in masterclasses led by renowned musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, David Taylor, Desirée Ruhstrat, Steven Osborne, and Arnaud Sussmann.

At 16 years of age, Kevin has already enjoyed many impressive solo performance opportunities.

He also loves chamber music and sharing his passion with his peers. Kevin received a full scholarship for the Sphinx Performance Academy at Curtis Institute of Music in the summers of 2020 and 2021, the summer of 2023 at Cleveland Music Institute and summer of 2024 at Julliard School of Music. He achieved semi-finalist status in the 2019 and 2021 New Music School Concerto Competitions.

Kevin participated in the New Music School competitive chamber program as part of the Sprezzatura String Quartet for the 2020-2022 season; guided by members of the Black Oak Ensemble. The quartet traveled to Southern France for a Music Festival in Simorre.

In the Summer of 2022, Kevin was accepted to the Heifetz International Music Institute Summer Program in Virginia. He also won the Chicago Chamber Music Festival Concerto Competition which earned him a solo with the Orchestra of Northeastern Illinois University.  During the 2022-2023 season, he was part of the New Music School’s Senti Piano Trio and was selected to compete at the Fischoff quarter-finals in May 2023.

Currently, Kevin is part of the Monaco Piano Trio at the New Music School. They are dedicating much of their time to participating in national competitions where their efforts have been recognized for their energetic performances.

In the Winter of 2023, Kevin secured 2nd place at the Youth Symphony of DuPage Concerto Competition and won first place in the Winter of 2024.

Kevin’s musical journey continued as he earned a spot in the Illinois All-State Honor Orchestras for 2023 and 2024.

Kevin enjoys performing on stage and communicating through music in many local outreach performances. His performances are characterized by his charming personality, offering a unique blend of expressive, mature musicianship, and energetic youthfulness.

Outside of cello, Kevin studies piano at home with his parents, he also takes taekwondo classes, loves to read, and enjoys outdoor activities.
