Robert Bruce

2024 Viola

Robert Bruce is a Boston-based violist whose work explores various styles and genres within the musical spectrum, while also looking for ways to move beyond the stereotype of a “classical musician.”

Bruce performs as a violist in various settings ranging from traditional orchestras and chamber ensembles to recording film scores, premiering new works, and participating in interdisciplinary collaborations. Bruce has worked with members of the Parker Quartet, Harlem Quartet, Altius Quartet, & Lydian Quartet as well as members of the Silkroad Ensemble including Kaoru Watanabe and Maeve Gilchrist. In 2024, Bruce was a fellow in the Bach Institute at Emmanuel Music in Boston where he had the opportunity to explore Bach’s marvelous cantata repertoire & have a masterclass with tenor Nicholas Phan. Bruce’s dedication to working outside the traditional western classical music canon is exemplified by his exploration of music by composers such as Osvaldo Golijov, Kenji Bunch, Andrew Gretzinger, & Amber (Mofan) Dai.

Robert Bruce holds a B.M. & an M.M. from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee under the tutelage of professor Rictor Noren.
